Jojo had a bad upbringing and led a life of crime to support his drug addiction. He was in prison for robbery, credit card fraud and drug possession for a total of eight years. He enrolled in a program to support young inmates struggling with addiction and help the sheriff understand the dangers of bringing narcotics to jail.
Jojo wants to show the younger inmates that their lives are worth so much more than where they are now and convince them to avoid a drug-related path. Sheriff Reginald B Scandrett says in the confessional that Jojo seemed like a mother figure to him. So, unless she falls back into her old ways, her participation in the program is a great help to him.
