Birdwatcher Raylene Wall’s nature snap has become a bit of a brain teaser — as the animal she snapped isn’t immediately obvious.

The photo, which is part of the Macaulay Library at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, shows tall weeds and other plants intertwined.

It makes a green and gray scene, but there is a face tucked away that is not immediately visible: that of an American bittern.

Upon first glance, it may be tough to see.

American bitterns are herons with thick, compact bodies.

They have shorter legs and thicker necks than typical herons and a slightly hunched posture.

Their daggerlike bills are long, straight, and sharply pointed, while their wings are broad but the wingtips are pointed.

They breed in Canada and the northern United States, but fly south to Florida, the Caribbean islands, and Central America in the colder months.

And they’re known to be tricky to find. According to the Cornell Lab, they “materialize among the reeds, and disappear as quickly, especially when striking a concealment pose.”

They’re “stealthy,” frequently standing still in marshes — just as this one is doing.

Time yourself for 15 seconds and see how quickly you can find it.

If you can’t find the bird, you don’t have to worry because the answer is below.
