New fan art imagines a scenario in which Tom Hardy’s Venom dunks on Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man during a basketball game. The last few years have seen Sony lean into its more villainous properties as the studio expands upon its newly established Sony Spider-Man Universe. 2018 saw the release of Venom, which introduced Hardy’s Eddie Brock. The character then received his own sequel last year in Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Following the somewhat anti-climatic release of this year’s critically-panned Morbius, Sony turned its attention to other upcoming SSU releases, including Venom 3, Kraven the Hunter and Madame Web.
The return of Garfield’s Spider-Man in last year’s Spider-Man: No Way Home has since sparked various discussions as to whether his Peter Parker could be the SSU’s Spider-Man, with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man currently occupied in the MCU’s Sacred Timeline. Having first appeared as the beloved web-slinging hero in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man, Garfield returned for its subsequent sequel in 2014, before his scheduled third instalment was scrapped by Sony. With Spider-Man: No Way Home having left many hoping to see Garfield return to the Spider-Man role full time, a new piece of fan art now imagines a unique crossover.
The art, which was shared to Instagram by @Venomhology, imagines an epic basketball game between Venom and Garfield’s Spider-Man. The incredibly realistic looking piece sees Venom dunk on Spider-Man, with his huge alien form almost sitting on his opponent’s shoulders, as he uses Spider-Man’s head as support for his dunk. Venom’s teethy smile can be seen in the detailed art, which quickly garnered a number of likes and comments praising the artist’s creative idea. Check out the art below.

Venom and Spider-Man do have some previous on-screen history following Topher Grace’s role in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3, though that movie saw Garfield’s fellow Peter Parker, Tobey Maguire, face the symbiote. Back in June, Hardy teased a script for the much-anticipated Venom 3, leading many to speculate just where the story could take Brock and Venom this time around. In fact, the crossover depicted in this new art could hint at a potential live-action situation (though perhaps without the basketball element). After No Way Home‘s end-credit scene saw Venom learn about Spider-Man during his brief visit to the MCU timeline, the door has most certainly been opened for a crossover, though it remains to be seen whether this will come to fruition.
Though an unlikely scenario, this art offers interesting renditions of these two beloved characters, with an incredible amount of detail having been put into the piece’s creation. Whether Garfield’s Spider-Man has a future is yet to be confirmed, as the actor previously shared that he has no plans to return as Spider-Man. Though, if the lead-up to No Way Home taught audiences anything, it is that Garfield’s word is not always to be trusted. Though a basketball game between Venom and Spider-Man would certainly be a hilarious and interesting sight to see, unfortunately, the situation in this art reads more like a Marvel’s What If..? storyline than a likely plot for the next Venom installment.
