He appears to have stayed here for 8 years before being promoted to permanent agent in Kansas. After that, he found himself in the Department of Explosives and the Department of Special Operations in Washington.

Soon after, he was seen becoming an assistant general agent in Dallas, Texas. Shortly thereafter, he returned to headquarters in Washington to assume the position of deputy chief of the Explosives Division. He then went on to pilot the Birmingham Division, which eventually helped him run the entire Nashville office.

Thus, he actively served his nation under the ATF banner for more than 33 years. He retired at the age of 57 in March 2010.

Jim Cavanaugh’s wife, Deborah ‘Debbie’ Parrott Cavanaugh, is no more. She passed away on October 20, 2021 at the age of 68. A Columbia native, Deborah was a student at Tennessee Tech University and worked for the late Senator Howard Baker and the US Department of Agriculture before she died.

She and Jim were married for over 42 years.

Additionally, Deborah is survived by her children: son James Matthew “Matt” Cavanaugh (married Kat Scudder) of Pittsburgh and daughter Jennifer Dawn (married Joel) Crima of Brentwood.
