Inside Out 2 finally has an official trailer. The movie is a sequel to the studio’s 2015 movie Inside Out, which dramatized the internal experience of 11-year-old Riley (Kaitlyn Dias) in the form of an adventure inside her mind taken by her emotions Joy (Amy Poehler) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). The movie was a massive box office success, earning $858 million and becoming the seventh highest-grossing movie of the year worldwide, eventually going on to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
Pixar has now unveiled the full-length trailer for the movie, seven months ahead of the official Inside Out 2 release date. Check it out below:
While the trailer opens on a bucolic scene, Riley’s 13th birthday prompts a redesign of the control room and the arrival of an orange emotion called Anxiety, whose use of the word “we” prompts the other emotions to realize that this isn’t the only frightening new emotion on the way. Pixar also unveiled a new poster for the movie that further teases the new characters and can be seen below:
Everything Is Changing in Inside Out 2
The original Inside Out used its adventure as a metaphor for Riley learning how to cope with sadness alongside a move that shook up her world. However, the arrival of puberty is a time of great change that will require Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust to learn how to cope with new emotions rather than just each other. In addition to Anxiety, the other emotions that are on their way in the movie seem to be Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment.
However, these major changes will be reflected behind the scenes in addition to in the story itself. The cast is experiencing a major shakeup, including the addition of Stranger Things star Maya Hawke as the voice of Anxiety. Two major roles have been recast as well. While the Inside Out 2 cast still includes Poehler, Smith, and Lewis Black (as Anger), Tony Hale is replacing Bill Hader as Fear, and Liza Lapira is replacing Mindy Kaling as Disgust.
Tony Hale is best known for playing Buster Bluth in Arrested Development.
It remains to be seen if Inside Out 2 will be as well-liked as the original, especially with a different vocal cast for several of the main characters. However, both the trailer and the cast seem to be harnessing the chaos of puberty. As long as the movie can sustain as consistent a metaphor as the original, it should be able to find a way to be just as impactful.
