Common Google Chromecast issues and how to fix them

Whether you access your favorite TV and movie content from one of the many streaming devices or through a TV with a built-in operating system, like Roku TV or Google TV, one of the best and cheapest devices continues to be the Google Chromecast.

While older Chromecast models are still available, Google’s latest Chromecast with Google TV is still being tested. Available in HD and 4K flavors ($30 and $50 respectively), it comes with a physical remote and a personalized home page based on your viewing history, putting it on par with competitors from Roku and Apple TV.

Even if you managed to set up Chromecast without any problems, like all modern technology, problems with Google Chromecast can occur. From time to time, you may experience connectivity issues, phone interference, and other small issues that prevent you from using Chromecast properly. In this guide, we’ve rounded up some of the most common Chromecast problems and what you can do to troubleshoot and fix each one.

Chromecast won’t connect to Wi-Fi

You may have noticed that your Chromecast video looks jerky and jerky. He may have encountered one of several screen buffers while trying to stream his favorite show. Regardless of the predominant symptom, the cause can usually be attributed to some type of network issue.

Step 1: First, check if other devices in the house can access the Internet and use Wi-Fi without problems. You may have a temporary internet outage. If other devices in your home can connect without issue, continue to the next step.

Step 2 – The next step in troubleshooting the Chromecast network is to simply try disconnecting or reconnecting all the devices in the chain. In this case, it’s your Chromecast, router, and modem (if separate). Turn off all your equipment, turn it back on, and wait for your network to be restored. After your Chromecast reboots, pick up your phone and try casting the app.

Step 3 – If you’re still having network issues, you can try an HDMI extender, which you can easily find at online stores like Amazon. While it’s nice to be able to hide your device, the Chromecast may not be in range to receive enough Wi-Fi handshaking. If you’re having trouble with Chromecast, try using an extender to get the Chromecast out of the back of the TV. This may be enough to improve the range of your device and enable a better Wi-Fi connection. Just make sure the extender supports your Chromecast, at least HDMI 2.0, for Chromecast 4K for example.

Step 4: Still having Wi-Fi issues? All Chromecast products (except the first generation) support both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz network bands. Depending on how far your TV and Chromecast are from your home router, it may be better to keep your device connected to one band rather than the other. The 5GHz band is strongest over short distances, but if your Chromecast is on the opposite end of your house from your router, the 2.4GHz band (better long-range connection) is probably the best option.

To change Wi-Fi bands, grab any device running your Google Home app. Tap start the applicationtap Chromecast you have problems, then touch settings in the upper right corner of the screen. Tap Device Informationso Wifi, so forget this network. Once you’ve done this, you’ll be able to reconnect your Chromecast to the new Wi-Fi band. If you were originally connected to the 5GHz band, try connecting to the 2.4GHz option.

Chromecast turns on randomly

Depending on how you have connected your Chromecast to your TV for power, you may experience random power changes. If your Chromecast is connected to your TV’s USB port for power, this could be the cause of the problem. Most TV-based USB ports will provide enough power to power external devices, but there are cases where this can fail.

One of the best ways to avoid this problem is to simply connect your Chromecast using the USB power supply that came with the device. This ensures a solid connection for your device at all times, and also prevents your Chromecast from restarting every time you turn off the TV.

Your streaming device is losing control

Most Chromecast devices require you to tap a Honor within any Chromecast-enabled app. Cast controls are essential to the Chromecast experience, but sometimes the cast feature (and associated controls) can disappear from your mobile device. There can be several reasons why this is happening, as well as various solutions.

For starters, your phone or tablet may be running an older version of the firmware for the app you chose. Although most iOS and Android devices will notify you if an update is due, you can manually check it yourself.

Step 1: For iPhone or iPad: Tap app store icon, then touch your Profile picture. Scroll down to Update part of the screen. If the app you’re trying to stream from needs an update, select the app and tap Update to start the process.

Step 2: For Android devices: tap Toy store icon. On the next screen, tap Your profile picture > App and device management > Govern > available updates, find the app you’re having trouble with and select it with the checkbox. Tap Tick in the top right corner to get all your apps on the current firmware.

Step 3 – If all your apps are up to date and you are still losing cast controls, you can try restarting your mobile device. Sometimes that’s all it takes to fix a Chromecast streaming problem. Depending on the hardware you are using, you may need to wait for a major device update before the problem goes away completely. Until then, continue with the reset.

If all else fails…

You’ve tried to improve your Wi-Fi signal and made sure all your apps and settings are up to date, but the Chromecast is still picky. When all else fails, you can try resetting the Chromecast to factory settings. This will reset the Chromecast to factory defaults and wipe your data, and this cannot be undone. This won’t remove any data from your mobile device or the Google Home app, but once the reset is complete, you’ll need to add your Chromecast back to the Home app.
