Alanis Morissette News

She was scheduled to perform a duet of the iconic song “You’re So Vain” with Olivia Rodrigo as part of a tribute to inductee Carly Simon at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony on Saturday night. However, Alanis Morissette has come forward to say that she had to leave the performance because of sexism.

Prior to leaving on Friday, Morissette did attend rehearsals. Morissette made it unclear in a post on her Instagram Live account what specifically went wrong during those rehearsals to cause her to leave the event at the last minute, despite the fact that she was featured on all internal schedules for the huge show up until Saturday night’s recording.

However, Morissette adamantly asserted that whatever she experienced while she was still on-site sparked sentiments of “an overarching anti-woman sentiment” in the business. She also appeared to lay the blame squarely at the feet of the telecast’s production crew, claiming that whatever she encountered there was in stark contrast to “countless incredible experiences with production teams of all genders throughout my life.”

However, there are conflicting behind-the-scenes versions of just what went wrong during the rehearsal. Several sources assert that Morissette “struggled with the song” during a run-through, which is what caused the disagreement and eventual exit.

Morissette-related sources refute that assertion, claiming that on Friday, she and Rodrigo were still in the early stages of figuring out the song with the house band. On Monday, Morissette sent a message to her Instagram page that says as follows:

There have been some unfounded rumours concerning my decision to skip the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony this past weekend. I have to start by saying how much I adore Carly Simon, Olivia Rodrigo, Dolly Parton, Janet Jackson, Pat Benatar, Sheryl Crow, Pink, Brandi Carlile, and Sara Bareilles — and all the amazing people and artists who were there,” she wrote, mentioning the majority of the female artists who were recognised, gave presentations, or performed on the show.

Morissette continued, “I have tolerated a lot of condescension and disrespectfulness, reduction, dismissiveness, contract-breaching, unsupportiveness, exploitation and psychological violence (and more) throughout my career. I have spent decades in an industry that is rife with an overarching anti-woman sentiment.

I put up with it because I wouldn’t let anything get in the way of connecting with the people I care about and identify with. I have endured more times than I can recall in order to serve and connect with people, which is what I live for. It’s difficult to avoid being impacted in any sector worldwide, but Hollywood is infamous for its mistreatment of women.
